About the Chattanooga Boys Choir
We believe that the lives of all people are enriched and strengthened by a love of music. The quality of life in our community is enhanced when there is a wide variety of opportunity for participation in musical activities and other artistic pursuits. Beyond its deep commitment to quality music education, the CBC experience builds a boy's character as well as his talent. All of our choirs reflect an instructional approach designed to nurture self-esteem, leadership, independence, discipline, and responsibility, as well as a life-long love of music.
CBC is a diverse group of over 120 boys aged 8 through senior in high school from more than forty public, private, home, and parochial schools. Auditions are held each spring for boys in grade 2 or above. The CBC program consists of four levels: Mozart, Schubert, Handel, and Concert. A fifth ensemble, Cantabile, exists for boys after voice change. Factors considered when evaluating boys for placement are age, maturity level, quality of singing voice, degree of self discipline, demonstrated interest in music, and personal behavior.

Mozart Choir
Mondays, 4:30-5:30pm The Mozart year acquaints beginners with basic musical terms, choral techniques, rhythm, and discovering use of head tone. This entry level provides a sense of belonging as boys learn about CBC standards, customs, and requirements, and become familiar with the faculty and other boys. A Mozart boy who successfully completes this introductory year moves on to Schubert Choir, which starts with Summer Camp. Camp attendance is required this summer and every summer thereafter. Schubert Choir
Tuesdays, 4:30-6:00pm In the Schubert Choir, sight-singing and ear-training are introduced. The boys learn how to listen to recorded music and study music history. They are introduced to basic music theory through use of a computer theory program. Handel Choir
Alternating Mondays, 4:50-6:15pm and all Tuesdays, 5:00-6:30pm The Handel Choir is an intermediate group preparing directly for individual promotion to the Concert Choir as each boy is considered qualified. There is an emphasis on 3-part singing and individual vocal development. Ear-training and sight-singing studies continue, as well as advanced music theory. Handel Choir members also have one individual voice lesson per semester. The Handel Choir has an extended repertoire and more opportunities for public performances. Concert Choir
Alternating Mondays, 5:10-6:30pm and all Tuesdays, 5:00-6:30pm The Concert Choir, the most advanced and professional section of the CBC, performs approximately 30 times per year, both locally and on its annual summer national and/or international tour. There is an emphasis on 2-4 part singing and ensemble refinement. Concert Choir members also continue a schedule of one private voice lesson per semester. The repertoire is more advanced, along with advanced ear-training, sight-singing, and music theory. Cantabile Choir
Tuesdays, 6:00-7:45pm A fifth performing ensemble, Cantabile, was recently added to the CBC. This ensemble, for changed-voice graduates of the treble CBC choirs, performs literature from the male glee club, barbershop, and traditional male chorus repertoire. It also provides the tenor and bass parts to SATB literature sung with the other choirs. |
