Placement in the Chattanooga Boys Choir is typically gained after an audition in the spring of a boy’s second grade year which takes place at the CBC offices or a number of area schools and churches. Boys are also invited to audition after this time, but advanced placement in choirs.

Those accepting an invitation to join begin with the organization in the fall of their third grade year in the Mozart Choir. Immediately, the boys begin a curriculum of music performance, history, and appreciation. Beginners are acquainted with basic musical terms, choral techniques, melody, rhythm, and the discovery of head tone. This entry level provides a sense of belonging as boys learn about CBC standards, customs, and requirements, and become familiar with the staff, faculty, and other boys.

Demonstrated success and achievement in the beginning year usually leads to promotion into the Schubert Choir. In this ensemble, sight-singing, 2-part repertoire, and ear-training are introduced and more extensively used. Basic music theory skills are taught and assessed through the use of music software in our Computer Lab.

Upon completion of the Schubert Choir curriculum and standards, boys are promoted into the Handel Choir, an intermediate group preparing directly for individual promotion into the Concert Choir. There is an emphasis on two and three part singing, individual vocal development, and ensemble skills. Ear-training and sight-singing studies continue, as well as advanced music theory.

The Concert Choir is the main performing and touring ensemble of the Chattanooga Boys Choir. The ensemble typically performs 2-4 part literature, and works primarily on aspects of ensemble refinement and performance. The repertoire is more advanced, along with skills in ear-training, sight-singing, and music theory. As the primary touring ensemble of the organization, the group performs approximately thirty times a year in academic, civic, and religious settings. Appointed “Ambassadors of Goodwill” for the city of Chattanooga, the boys represent the area both locally and on their annual national and/or international tours.
